This powerful and dynamic symbol appears on Buddhist and Shinto temples all over Japan. Its name is 'tomoe,' meaning turning or circular, referring to the motion of the earth. The tomoe is related to the yin yang symbol, and has a similar meaning, representing the play of forces in the cosmos. Visually, the tomoe is made up of interlocking flames. This is the most common tomoe emblem which has three flames known as Mitsu Tomoe. A mitsu (triple) tomoe reflects the threefold division of Shinto cosmology, and is said to represent the earth, the heavens, and humankind. Some view the mitsu tomoe as representative of the threefold division (Man, Earth and Sky) at the heart of the Shinto religion and used by the samurai as their traditional symbol. It was also adopted by western Gnostics as an emblem of cosmic creativity, the threefold nature of reality or fate, and the eternally spiraling cycles of time.
