The much loved Dolphin is a complex animal and has had many different meanings attached to it throughout history. Dolphins were considered the "King of fish" by many ancient cultures for its noble and graceful qualities. In Ancient Greece and Rome the dolphin was associated with the god Poseidon/ Neptune and symbolized intelligence, strength, freedom, compassion and protection over the sea. The dolphin was also associated with the gods Eros/ Cupid and symbolized love, sensuality, playfulness, attraction, gentleness and joy. In Greek mythology, the god Dionysus was known to turn himself into a dolphin and transported to the shrine at Delphi where the cult of dolphin worshippers convened. The association of Dionysus with dolphin symbolism is one of transcendence, wildness and creative self expression. In Celtic symbolism the dolphin is known as the "watcher of the waters" and guardians of all things associated to water.

whose stirrings speak of

a hidden soul beneath"
